A Quick DIY AC Tune-Up: Keep Your System Running Strong This Summer

Garrett Gerard • May 27, 2025

Summer heat is on its way, and the last thing you want is an air conditioner that can’t keep up.

That’s why we put together this quick and easy DIY AC Tune-Up Guide — a simplified version of what the pros do, designed to help you keep your system running efficiently and reliably all season long.

Step 1: Spray Down the Outdoor Unit

Your AC’s outdoor condenser can accumulate a surprising amount of dust, dirt, and debris. Sometimes it looks like your unit forgot to take off its fur coat from winter. That buildup blocks airflow and reduces efficiency.

 What to do: ⬇️

You can use a garden hose to gently spray the fins from the outside. You don’t need to take anything apart! Just rinse through the fins around the unit to clear them out.

⚠️ DO NOT USE A PRESSURE WASHER ⚠️

Step 2: Change Your Air Filter

A clean filter improves airflow, protects your system, and helps you breathe easier indoors.

 When to replace: ⬇️

  • Ideally: Every spring and fall
  • Pets or allergies? Consider every 2–3 months
  • Honesty Hour... "Most manufacturers say monthly… but they sell filters. Every 6 months is usually fine for most homes."

Step 3: Feel the Suction Line

Old-school but effective:  You can get a general sense of your refrigerant levels by feeling the insulated suction line while the AC runs.

 What to look for: ⬇️
It should feel like a cold drink straight from the fridge. If it’s freezing up or barely cool, your system may be low on refrigerant — and that’s a job for the pros.

Step 4: Check Your Temperature Drop

This is an excellent DIY test to see if your system is cooling efficiently.

 How to do it: ⬇️
Use a thermometer to check the air temperature at a
return vent (where air is pulled) and a supply vent (where cold air blows out).
You’re aiming for a
15–20°F difference. Anything less than that could mean your system needs a tune-up or refrigerant adjustment.

When to Call the Pros

This simple self-check can go a long way in helping your system stay in top shape. But if you notice:

  • Weak cooling
  • A freezing suction line
  • Poor temperature drop
